The national intangible cultural heritage "soft gold" that carries the millennium-old craftsmanship of Lingnan
In the history of Chinese textiles, there is a fabric hailed as "soft gold" – born in the water towns of Lingnan, it is formed through exposure to wind and sun, and each piece is unique. This is "Xiangyunsha" silk.
【What is Gambiered Canton Silk?】
Gauze Using mulberry silk as the base fabric, woven with a leno weave on a traditional hand-pulled jacquard loom, the fabric surface features fine, transparent mesh, making it light and extremely breathable. The weaving process is extremely complex, time-consuming, and yields very little, making it highly precious.
Crepe Using mulberry silk as the base fabric, woven in a plain weave, the fabric surface is dense and delicate with a warm luster and excellent drape, making it the most classic Xiangyunsha silk fabric.
【Craftsmanship reliant on nature】
The production of Gambiered Canton Silk is a deep collaboration with nature, requiring over 30 steps and only feasible during clear weather seasons: 1. Immersion in dioscorea: The mulberry silk base fabric is repeatedly immersed in natural dioscorea juice, allowing the fabric to absorb the tannins from the dioscorea. 2. Sun-drying: The juice-soaked fabric is spread on grass and repeatedly exposed to the sun, allowing the dioscorea components to bind tightly with the silk fibers. 3. Blackening: Shunde river mud, rich in ferrous ions, is evenly applied to the front of the fabric, reacting chemically with the dioscorea components to form a glossy, dark black surface. 4. Washing and drying: Repeated washing, atomization, and drying ultimately create a unique texture that is black on one side and reddish-brown on the other. 5. Finishing and storage: The dried Xiangyunsha silk is organized and stored until its feel and color reach the ideal state. The entire process uses no chemical dyeing aids, relying entirely on natural materials and weather conditions. The color and texture of each piece of Gambiered Canton silk vary slightly due to differences in weather and manual techniques.
【Gambiered Canton silk is not just a fabric woven with ancient craftsmanship; it embodies a dedication to and appreciation for a high-quality lifestyle】
It is known as the "breathing fabric": - Naturally breathable and quick-drying, it doesn't stick to the skin, keeping you cool in summer and comfortable in winter. - Anti-mold, antibacterial, and UV-resistant, with durability far exceeding ordinary silk. - Rich in natural amino acids, long-term wear is friendly to the skin. - Becomes softer and more lustrous with wear, time adding its unique glow and charm.
The value of Gambiered Canton silk has never been just the fabric itself; it is the artisan's reverence for nature and their persistence in preserving craftsmanship.
