Gauze Twill Weaving: The Pinnacle of All Ancient Chinese Silks

Among the four classic Chinese silks — Ling, Luo, Chou and Duan — Luo gauze boasts the highest craft threshold. Woven by twisting warp threads around one another, it naturally forms uniform breathable mesh openings. Reserved exclusively for imperial royalty since ancient times, its intricate layered texture cannot be replicated by mechanical imitation.

TUSSAIA’s Two Traditional Luo Gauze Looms

All-Wood Antique Loom

Constructed entirely without metal components, this loom generates gentle vibration and exerts mild tension on silk filaments. It produces ultra-sheer, ethereal Luo gauze reserved for haute couture, with extremely limited output. Capable only of narrow-width fabric panels, its weaving process demands exceptionally long working hours.

Iron-Wood Composite Loom

Its load-bearing frame is reinforced with iron, while all parts in direct contact with silk remain solid hardwood. This design eliminates frame wobbling and filament breakage during wide-length weaving, enabling full-size bolt production. The resulting Luo fabric carries distinct structural drape and firm texture.

Both loom variants exclusively use premium 5A+ continuous-length mulberry silk. Boasting exceptional tensile strength, the filaments withstand countless twists without snapping, yielding neat, transparent mesh openings that retain the silk’s innate soft pearlescent luster.

Core Textural Traits of Luo Gauze

· Breathable Comfort: Intertwined mesh pores facilitate free air circulation, preventing stuffiness during hot summer months

· Versatile Aesthetics: All-wood loom gauze floats like wispy mist; iron-wood loom gauze features structured, weighty drape

· Understated Elegance: Mesh openings cast soft, graduated light layers without harsh glare

· Gambier Dye Compatible: Its open texture fully absorbs natural tuber mud pigment for rich, multi-dimensional tonal depth after gambier dying

Creating Luo gauze takes ten times the labor hours of ordinary satin for the same surface area.

Every stage relies on manual thread control; any flawed fabric is discarded outright to uphold authentic ancient craft standards. TUSSAIA preserves both traditional weaving systems. Using premium 5A+ mulberry silk and slow hand-weaving techniques, we carry forward two millennia of artisanal Luo gauze craftsmanship.
